In Traditional Chinese Medicine, diet and nutrition play a very important role. Each food has a particular taste and property. Some foods are "damp" whilst others are "hot". There are foods which act on a specific organ. For example, naturally sweet foods benefit the spleen, A food also has an energetic action, that is it may strengthen or move Qi or blood. Knowing the action, taste and temperature of foods, a practitioner may recommend the use or exclusion of certain foods in specific conditions. Some views about diet and nutrition widely held in the West may conflict with those of TCM. For example, oranges and orange juice contain Vitamin C and are regarded as healthy. However, as their properties are considered to be 'damp' and 'hot', TCM teaches that they should be avoided in conditions associated with 'damp' and 'heat', such as eczema.
