Deafness - Chinese Medicine explanation and treatment
Acupuncture is often used in China when deafness follows an infection, or even in some types of inherited deafness, though not always successfully. Mucus in the ears following an infection will be treated by a Chinese Medicine practitioner with herbs such as peppermint, thorowax root, plantain seed, chrysanthemum flowers, balloon flower root and Chinese gentian, self-heal and bitter almonds.

In cases of deafness or tinnitus in old people, caused by age, a Chinese Medicine practitioner will tonify the kidneys using black sesame seed, dodder seed, mulberry fruit or eclipta and eucommia bark. This can be successful in reducing tinnitus and there should be an improvement in the hearing, or at least a halt to the deterioration.
