Introductory Tai Chi Chuan Classes
with Master Jie Jiang

Tai Chi Chuan

Tai Chi Chuan, or taijiquan, is an ancient Chinese form of co-ordinated body movements focusing on the cultivation of internal energy "chi" or "qi". Its aim is to harmonise the mind, body and spirit, promoting both mental and physical well-being through softness and relaxation. When practised correctly the movements (or Form) of tai chi appear rhythmical, effortless and in continuous flow.

Tai Chi Chuan originated in China between 400 and 600 years ago. Over the years the forms have been modified and developed by various masters up to the present day. Now there are 5 major family styles that are practiced in countries all over the world. In recent times China brought together the family styles and combined them into a short form (24 step) and long form (42 step). These were designed to make it easier to learn Tai Chi and still derive some of the health benefits associated with its practice.

With the practice of tai chi the student becomes revitalised, relaxed, tolerant, self-confident and stronger and healthier in both mind and body. Unlike most forms of exercise and sport, tai chi does not rely on strength, force and speed, making it ideal for people of both sexes, young and old alike whether strong or weak. It is this approach that makes tai chi such a unique art, and one that brings benefits in many areas. Research has shown that long term practice of Tai Chi is able to reduce pain, stress and anxiety and can benefit those suffering from heart disease, high blood pressure, arthritis and multiple sclerosis. It also helps to burn calories and can surprisingly burn more than surfing and nearly as many as downhill skiing!!
